Receiving AWS 2016 Best Practices Winner, City on a Cloud

IdeaCrew, Inc., together with its partner Networking For the Future, is honored to be a leading technology contributor to the DC Health Benefit Exchange Authority (DCHBX) team that won the Best Practices award for the 2016 Amazon Web Services City on a Cloud Innovation Challenge.  The City on a Cloud Innovation Challenge is a global competition of local and regional government and technology partners using AWS to deploy innovative solutions to move government forward on behalf of their citizens.

In a year when the AWS team received a record number of applicants from cities, counties, and municipalities all over the world, the significance of being recognized as one of this year’s winners is truly an honor.   Dan Thomas, CEO of IdeaCrew and Chief Engineer for the DC Health Benefit Exchange shared, “We’re honored to be selected from such a strong group of Challenge finalists.  We are grateful for AWS recognition and I couldn’t be more proud of the DCHBX team and their accomplishments”.

DCHBX is responsible for the on-line health insurance marketplace in the District of Columbia for small businesses and residents. District residents and businesses can shop and enroll in affordable quality health and dental insurance through DC Health Link. DCHBX moved to an open-source software application and to a cloud-based environment for its private individual health insurance customers and employers purchasing coverage for their employees.

IdeaCrew’s DevOps teams architected, implemented and operates a flexible, secure infrastructure to host DCHBX mission critical Enrollment Application in the Amazon Web Services cloud. The infrastructure design enables software deployment with zero downtime, auto-scaling based on traffic load, real-time performance and error monitoring/recovery and automated deployment using Chef, Capistrano and other related tools.

DCHBX now uses an Agile development approach, which is cost effective and allows Exchange to quickly respond to customer suggestions and to deploy website improvements (as frequent as daily) without system down-time.  Switching to open source code and agile software development in a commercially hosted government cloud, helps DCHBX save money while providing customers a better shopping and enrollment experience.

IdeaCrew, Inc. is a full-service technology company, building modern enterprise software, web applications and mobile solutions for public and private sector clients.
