Our Impact

We are only as strong as the communities we work in.

IdeaCrew was built on a simple belief: a company can only be as strong as the community it operates in. Not as a slogan, and not as a strategy, but as a fact, the way the foundation of a building is a fact.

We build the systems that connect people to the services they need. That work already puts us close to where people struggle. Our impact work starts from the same place, asking one question wherever our people are and wherever our work reaches: what is going on here that we can actually do something about?

Impact starts with the work we choose to do.

The systems we build decide whether a family gets coverage, whether an agency can trust its data, whether a program reaches the people it exists to serve. When the work is that consequential, the most important impact decision is not where we give. It is which projects we take on, and how carefully we think about the people who will live with what we build.

We do not fix everything, and we do not pretend to. What we can control is this: we choose work where we can make something measurably better for real people, and we hold ourselves to that standard on every engagement. Philanthropy is one expression of that commitment. The work itself is the deeper one.

We look one step downstream.

The clearest place to make a difference is often right next to what you already understand. We build the marketplaces where people shop for health coverage, which means we can see what sits one step downstream: whether a system reaches the people it should, and what happens to them when it falls short, like the medical bills that follow people onto credit reports and quietly block a car loan or an apartment.

That downstream view shapes both halves of our impact: the projects we take on, toward work that improves real outcomes rather than just shipping software, and where we invest beyond our contracts, toward problems our work has shown us and partners already working to solve them. In both cases the question is the same: where can we bring something real, our dollars, our expertise, and our urgency?

When we see a need we can meet, we move.

Community impact does not require a foundation, a committee, or a strategy deck. At IdeaCrew, when our senior leaders agree on something worth doing, we act. It is the same agility that lets a small firm deliver what larger ones cannot, pointed at the community instead of a contract.

That is an advantage smaller companies will always have. We stay close to the communities we serve, and we can put resources behind a problem quickly, while it still matters.

A Recent Example

Retiring $12.3 million in medical debt for Washington, D.C. families.

This spring, letters began arriving in mailboxes across the District. Each one told the recipient that a medical debt they had carried for years, the kind that follows you onto credit reports and blocks access to housing and transportation, had been paid in full. No application. No catch.

In partnership with the nonprofit Undue Medical Debt, IdeaCrew retired $12.3 million in medical debt for more than 12,000 Washington, D.C. residents. We did not pick the cause out of a brochure. We build the marketplaces where people shop for coverage, so we could see what sits one step downstream: the bills that arrive after coverage falls short.

It is one expression of a larger commitment, and a clear example of what that commitment looks like when it is pointed well.

A hand holding a past-due medical notice

The same question, answered many ways.

Medical debt is the most visible example this year, but it is not the whole story. The same question, what can we actually do something about, keeps producing answers:

When the fall government shutdown left federal workers turning to food banks, we gave to the Capital Area Food Bank.

When Alzheimer’s touched someone who helped build this company, we invested in research toward a cure.

For young adults facing cancer, we support the Ulman Foundation and the work it does to help them and their families.

Wherever our people live, and wherever our work reaches, the principle travels with us.

Organizations we are proud to support.

IdeaCrew supports a range of organizations working to strengthen communities and improve lives. Through both financial contributions and active participation, we partner with groups whose work reflects our values.

Impact is everyone’s business.

Whether you lead a large company or a small business like ours, you can look one step downstream from the work you already do, find the problem you are equipped to see, and bring what you have to the people already working on it.
