How We Work

The most consequential problems in government technology are often the ones no one has named yet. Agencies operate within processes that have been in place for years. The workaround becomes the way things are done. The manual step outlives whatever made it necessary. That is not neglect. It is what happens in any organization that has been delivering under pressure long enough: the system teaches everyone what normal looks like.

Many of our people came to IdeaCrew from the agencies and systems we now serve, and the rest have spent years working inside them. That experience means we notice what familiarity has made invisible. When Washington, D.C.’s Department of Behavioral Health first engaged us, the visible problem was unreliable federal reporting. The deeper problem, which became clear as we mapped data arriving from nearly 70 providers in inconsistent formats, was that the agency could not trust its own data. Defining that problem was as valuable as building the portal that solved it.

That approach is what distinguishes a partner with real domain knowledge from a vendor that builds to a list of requirements. We work shoulder-to-shoulder with client teams, not as an external vendor handing off deliverables, and we keep finding and fixing problems for as long as we are embedded, growing our partnership and our impact together.

IdeaCrew was founded in Washington, D.C. in 2002. From the beginning, our work has centered on the hardest technology problems in government: the systems that can’t go down, the deadlines that can’t slip, the projects where the people who depend on the outcome have no fallback. That has shaped how we hire, how we engage, and what we consider a job well done.

Our state-based marketplace work defines us best. When we built DC Health Link, we were not just building software — we were establishing the modular approach that would eventually serve three states and hundreds of thousands of people. That combination of engineering discipline and domain knowledge is what we bring to every engagement, regardless of where it sits in the spectrum of our services.
